My friend and neighbor had been a nurse for almost 40 years. She stopped working the day after she got diagnosed with cancer. Her front yard is a statement of thanks from patients she helped throughout the years. She never liked cut flowers, gave them away, only kept the potted plants. “They don’t die,” she said and planted them around their house. I have a feeling it was more than just a statement but a reflection of a job that has its dark sides.

The older we get, the more we get used to death walking right beside us. Perhaps it was always like that, we just didn’t dare to acknowledge it. When we are young, we demand the right to live our lives -and nothing is wrong with that and so for many years, the thought of dying is a disturbance.

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

It was my first summer in many years without neighbor kids in my workshop. Bravely, I had decided teens and teenagers are the parent’s problem -not mine- and I have closed my free vacation daycare, until further notice.

I remember Paul so well. He was such a fun guy, a goofball, who made others laugh. He was a kind soul, but had some temper problems, especially after the loss of a tight tennis match. We were in the same tennis club. I danced at his wedding, celebrated his daughter’s birth with him, just like all his other friends.

The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What’s that, a bonus?

“No sight so sad as that of a naughty child,” he began, “especially a naughty little girl. Do you know where the wicked go after death?”

“They go to hell,” was my ready and orthodox answer.

Sometimes, when I at least expect it, I come along a story that makes my heart overflow with joy. It’s never one of the loud headline-bait stories, it’s always a quiet story, one that hardly will make it to the front section of any newspaper -even though that’s where it should be.

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, “There, she is gone.”

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me — not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”

And that is dying…
