Club Foody | Beef Rouladen Recipe • A Popular German Dish! | Club Foody
Roulade, with red cabbage. One of my favorite dishes as well.

I have a love-hate relationship with Wikipedia and deal with it in the same, almost insane way I deal with Amazon. I use it because it’s convenient, I trust neither. Both companies (or services) give me for a short time the illusion that they actually might care about me, the paying customer, or in Wikipedia’s case, the frugal donor, who dares to only give them the $1 they actually asked for. Come to think of it, perhaps it’s not so much a donation, but the tip I am willing to pay for a flawed service.

Today is Saint Nikolaus day, and in a few hours, right after dawn, little children in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many other countries, will sit in the living room and kitchen, huddled up together waiting for the Saint to arrive. Even now fifty years later and five thousand miles away, I still celebrate the day and I remember my childhood.

After sixteen years, Angela Merkel’s time as German chancellor is coming to an end. She had decided to step down a year ago, and I wish her well. I hope she will now find the time to enjoy her private life with her husband. Whatever her reasons are for the end of her career, may it be forever her secret.

DC Report: Peace plan not — more like Monopoly's Get Out of Jail Free card

Soon, the political affiliation will matter more than ever. A new bill the house will vote on next week, will ask prosecutors and judges to be lenient IF the suspect belongs to their political party. For example IF the state is run by Democrats, most likely in the future democratic criminals will get away with a slap on the wrist rather than be locked up behind bars, same goes vice versa for Republican states.

Lent was a big deal in our Catholic boarding school. 40 days of fasting was the motto, which didn’t bother us too much, we were used to it. Boarding school food is a bit like hospital food, and fasting comes naturally.

Imagine everybody would be an organ donor right from the start, with birth. Of course, people could still opt-out at any time. Just a short trip to city hall and you would be registered as a none-organ donor. Also, of course, family members would have the right to revoke your consent, or should I say BIRTHRIGHT, after a loved one died.

The results are in. Angela Merkel will go into her 4th term as German chancellor, even though her party lost almost 10% and finishes short of an absolute majority.  No big surprises here. Most of us expected the outcome, still, the election result is shocking. For the first time after World War II, a right-wing party will take a seat in the German parliament.

zimt-sterne

Cinnamon star cookies (Zimtsterne) are a traditional part of the Holiday Season in Austria and Germany. Cinnamon and almonds taste great together; the smell of the cookie in the oven is mouthwatering. The history of the cookie is interesting as well. Cinnamon was a rare and rather expensive spice in Europe, and almonds had to be imported. Only the rich and Royals could afford both throughout the year. Ordinary people used cinnamon and almonds only for once-a-year festivals such as Christmas.
