Could it be that simple? Kids and teachers in Thailand wear special hats, which make sure that they keep the necessary distance. I love the idea for many reasons. First of all, I can see that it illustrates distance in a way a child will understand.
Let’s go back 45 years and let’s travel to Bavaria, in the South of Germany -again. A girl in her robe, wearing Austrian knitted houseshoes, is on her way to the auditorium. In one hand a blanket, in the other a plastic cup full of gummy bears, she joins all the other girls and the nuns who watch over them when school is over and during the nights. The little girl sits down full of anticipation. During the day the room was used for music classes and the drama club. On special events, the parents and family sat in the audience and watched the children sing and perform.
Many people in Asia wear ‘Face Shields’ instead of face masks. Dancers in Bangkok are still very beautiful when they perform.
So your kids will be at spring break for longer than you hoped they would. School is out -and the way it looks like it will be out for a while. Leaves you with one question:
What to do with the kids?
Lent was a big deal in our Catholic boarding school. 40 days of fasting was the motto, which didn’t bother us too much, we were used to it. Boarding school food is a bit like hospital food, and fasting comes naturally.
“The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds.
I watched the news last night, saw the pictures of our “new” old schools and I while I am glad they made them safer, I feel saddened at the same time. Many of the schools now look like prisons. The school shootings have left marks. Locked and guarded doors, steel walls, double entrees and armed security guards on duty are now the norm in many schools.
I remember school well. The feeling of panic when the teacher surprised us with an unexpected test. It didn’t happen often, but once or twice I was unprepared and I remember it well.
