My friend is on her way to Europe. She and her husband will spend the spring in Crete, Greece, and they are both very excited about it. They will spend a few days in Rome, Italy, a couple of days in Vienna, Austria, and will make a few other stops in other countries.

The first time I visited Rome the Capital City of Italy, only 6 hours away from our farm in South Tyrol, I felt at home. I had never been there before, but had walked the streets of Rome for many hours in my mind at school, when we learned all about the Roman Empire. I had wept for the innocent and poor who were tortured, or were just a human toy in the brutal games the rich invented to entertain themselves and the masses.

Most and foremost, don’t ever write about religion, because good lord almighty you might rattle the boat. It’s almost as bad as writing about politics! Which is -if you live in the United (divided) States of America, perhaps the biggest blogging offense you can commit.

What household chore do you absolutely hate doing?

I hate doing the dishes, because we don’t have a dish washer. Miss Smartiepants here decided a few years back, that we didn’t need one (what was I thinking???). I love our kitchen, but it’s rather small and I decided that I didn’t want to lose cabinet space.

What is your favorite piece of art? (it doesn’t have to be famous)

I bought this picture at a thrift store, for a the outrages amount of $7. I fell in love with it and it hangs since years in our living room. I wish I could make out the artists signature, because I would like to have more information about the picture and the painter. I think it’s a very unusual piece of art and I would like to know what the painter had in mind.

What made you feel good this week?

I decided to take two days off. I can’t even remember when I took a few days off, so I think it was about time. I did nothing useful and it felt so good. I needed it.

Yes of course, I tossed a coin in that damn fountain and made a wish. It was my first vacation alone. I had driven to Rome all by myself in the old, cancer eaten Beetle I had back then. I had studied Latin in school, had learned everything there is to know about the Roman Empire and the politics back then and now, for the first time, I was visiting the city of my dreams and walking the old roads that had made so much history. I was 18 years old and an adult, so they said.
