January is half over, and now I am ready for the new year mentally as well. Two pieces of furniture that I had quoted to finish in 2023 were still sitting in my workroom New Year’s morning, reminding me that I had fallen behind in my schedule when I was fighting a cold for weeks.

I give all my customers the same advice before we even begin to plan a project. “Be brave, be courageous, be creative. I am just the laborer, you are the designer,” and with that, I often leave them overwhelmed.

In January, I started posting about “My 12 new months of purpose” -as so often full of plans, looking into the future with high expectations. I enjoyed writing my monthly reports until June, when there was just not much to reveal.
I always have great projects in my workroom, but some are just more special than others. It’s either the past, which speaks to me through the pieces, or I fall head over heels in love with customers and their story.

“We have this old chair in the barn,” he started the conversation, and with that, he had my full attention. We talked on the phone for a while, we emailed back and forth, and then we finally met.

“What are you doing?”
“I am painting our living room.”
“You are sitting in front of the computer.”
